Hawks entertain Malton and Norton...

Chris Walker12 Feb 2013 - 15:14

Ionians Hawks click to give Malton and Norton a real beating.

Saturday saw the Hawks welcome Malton and Norton to Brantingham Park, unfortunately for Malton the hospitality firmly stopped there.
Perfect rugby conditions bestowed Brantingham as both teams took to the pitch in what turned out to be a total domination in every facet of the game by the home side. To be fair to Malton it was only a matter of time before the Hawks clicked against a team and unfortunately for them it was last Saturday.
Controlled and high tempo phased rugby by the forwards totally blew the Malton team apart, and once the Hawks had put three phases together the net result was a try every time. Gary Stephenson crossed the line on four occasions in the first half and showed his class on how to finish a move off with the callousness of an assassin.
The forwards were destroying Malton and the backs galloped in at every opportunity with try's from James Ashton, Phil Dinsdale and Dante Mama. Redders kicking six of the seven conversion attempts to give the Hawks 47-0 lead at half time.
In truth it could have been more if sloppy handling had been eradicated, having said that one cannot be too critical with a half time score line like that.
The second half went very much the same way as the first.....strong forward carries, followed by quick ball through Dinsdale to release the backs at will. Adam Rice was having a strong game at 13 and managed to cross the white wash on two occasions as did Gary Stephenson giving him a 6 try tally! Ashton and Dinsdale scored again and the afternoon was finished off with Alex Torkington getting on the score sheet after putting in a strong 80 minute shift.
In fairness to Malton they never really gave up although they knew they were week beat after 20 minutes. Clearly Redders felt sorry for them as he missed all 7 conversion attempts presented to him in the second half. Macca even commented that Annika could have kicked half of them with a pair of her pink, fluffy mules on! The last play of the match resulted in Malton scoring and kicking the goal to give a final score of 82 points to 7.
Difficult to give an out and out MOM as all players clearly played well to secure such an emphatic win against a side who we narrowly beat by one point back in September.
It was great to have Ben Rice Davis back with us as well as his pal Toby, both of whom showed what happens when a front row hits a purple patch. The backs were exemplary in their finishing and it was great to have Dante with us if only for one game...... It was however decided to award the MOM to 19 year old Charles Parkinson who made his Hawks debut at 7.....a real talent and an utter nuisance to all the Malton team.
It was a great afternoon (and night) showing how far the Hawks have come over the last couple of seasons. The Hawks managements only regret is that they wish they were 20 years younger, now that would be messy.....
