HULL IONIANS HAWKS 48 HUDDERSFIELD 0
A strong Hawks side welcomed Huddersfield , who are always a pleasure to entertain.
Huddersfield were playing their first game of the season but they proved to be a very enthusiastic and competitive side who made the Hawks work hard for every point.
It was 15 minutes before the Hawks opened their account when they ran back a loose kick and the backs put Dave Redford in for his first try of the season Shortly afterwards another backs move released winger Jon Steel on a diagonal run to score his first try, which was converted by Dave Redford. The Hawks were unable to add to their tally until just before halftime when Phil Dinsdale broke down the blindside and put centre Ben Rose in for a converted try.
With their first real attack of the second half the Hawks secured the bonus point when the forwards drove Charlie Allenby over the line. The lead stretched to 29-0 when from a scrum good fast hands gave Jon Steel enough room to run in at the corner. The sixth try was a cheeky solo try from stand off Glen Boyd, who after making a clean break and kicking through, flicked the ball out of the fullbacks hands ,caught it and dived over the line . For a while a number of substitutions led to a loss of structure from the Hawks and they seemed to have no direction for a while. When they settled down again a short pass from scrum half Callum Cone sent hooker Mark Woodall crashing over from short range enabling Dave Redford to add his fourth conversion. Jon Steel completed the scoring and his hat-trick when he swooped on a loose ball and won a 60 metre foot race to the corner.
A special mention must be given to Ionians prop Mark Baxter who pulled on a Huddersfield shirt in the second half to avoid the game going to uncontested scrums.
Man of the match was awarded to John Steele who was playing for the Hawks under the first team rotation policy. Forward of the match was awarded to Myles Cooling a university student playing in the second row.
The Hawks take on probably their hardest game of the season next week when they travel away to Wharfedale ,which will be real test of their credentials.
