It was close call on man of the match with Dave Laverick called just ahead of try scoring hooker Ally Forth with some outstanding work in defence and attack by Jon Steel earning him back of the match in a game where time and space were at a premium.
The first scrum saw Hull Ionians take the ball against the head which they achieved three more times in the next 15 minutes destroying Bromsgrove’s morale.
Playing up the hill but with the wind at their backs saw excellent kicking by James Ferguson pin Bromsgrove back when ever they made any ground assisted by excellent follow up tackling by the whole team.
On 15 minutes moving the ball wide saw Sam Wilson make ground then chip neatly to the line where his chase earned an attacking 5 metre scrum.
Forward power made no mistake with Danny Hague and Joe Sanders making ground before Ally Forth dived through to score, James Ferguson converting.
Seven minutes later quick second phase ball saw Isaac Green break into space with Ally Forth in support to send Mike Bateman over in the corner, keeping control to touch down through a very strong tackle.
Too many penalties for not releasing just short of the line let Bromsgrove off the hook but after Joe Makin was stopped inches short of the line, Bromsgrove offside saw James Ferguson strike a simple penalty while Mark Wigham was taking a 10 minute break for killing the ball once too often.
Bromsgrove came out fired up after the break knowing they had 5 more minutes against 14 men and finally made it count when a hospital pass put them back on the attack and prop Peter Koziot powered over, Jon Critchlow adding the goal.
Well timed high speed tackles by Jon Steel twice cut out Bromsgrove overlaps while handling errors by both teams also lost chances.
On 52 minutes Bromsgrove gained a simple penalty by Critchlow which apparently made it game on but Hull Ionians had other ideas and spent the rest of the match pinning Bromsgrove back in their own half.
Ten minutes later Jon Steel’s ball hunting skills saw him gather quick ball from a ruck and break straight through the middle with Mark Wigham in support to gallop under the posts making Ferguson’s conversion a formality, with the rest of the game played out as a midfield stale mate.
