Ionians too strong for visitors

Ionians welcomed Driffield to Brantingham Park, in a keenly anticipated game, following on from last spring' s defeat.

Ionians kicked off with the wind behind them, and as Driffield passed the ball through hands, a spilt pass enabled Joe Walker to collect and sprint through the visitors defence for the first try. 5 to 0, conversion attempt missed.

Tackles were strong from both teams. Occassional off sides by Ionians enabled Driffield to advance into the home teams territory. However the defence was strong against Driffield's forwards. Though 2 injuries saw the coaches ring early changes. Driffield maintained the pressure on Ionians line, and a scrum on the 5 metre line in front of the posts gave them an opportunity, but I's won against the head and a clearance upfield from Myers, suddenly led to an Ionians attack. Kirk kicked over the top to gain field position and from a scrum on the visitors 22, Toms popped up to break through some tackles to score. Conversion made by Kirk 12 to 0.

Ionians started to gain the upper hand at set pieces, though breakdowns remained fiercely contested. A break from Malcolmson,
saw Ionians progress upfield, and as the ball moved swiftly through hands Joe Walker was on hand to score his second, Kirk hitting the post with the conversion attempt. Ionians threatened again as the half progressed, but were unable to increase their lead. Sam Blyth showed good skills to evade the defence, and the forwards led by Dan Betts, man of match, continued to lay the platform.
Half time 17 to 0.

Second half saw Ionians make wholesale changes, Mcleod on debut at full back, but the home side continued to progress. Marshall was held up by Drffields defence, over the line. Waudby and Malcolmson showed good speed in breaks. Forwards worked hard to secure the ball as Driffield's players started to tire. Centre Cadey was concussed shortly after I's had added to the score, with a cross field kick, from a scrum, knocked back by Malcolmson, collected by Mcleod, and passed out again to Malcolmson, to register his first try of the season. 22 to 0.

Try of the match started with a break from Holgate at the lineout, in Ionians half, support play and passing in the tackle, saw Ionians keep the ball alive, the pass inside from Evison as he ran out of room on the right wing, and the final pass to Ball, to score his first try, sublime.

The last 5 minutes saw Driffield progress, and after some penalties, Carr was able to bull doze his way over the line.

Final score 27 to 5.

With thanks to David Reid for officiating.
