Joe Makin will play his 400th game for Hull Ionians next week at Macclesfield, the first player to reach that milestone. But for a serious injury sustained in 2016 he would have reached this terrific achievement sooner. His recovery and subsequent performances are testament to the dedication and commitment of a truly great ‘Hull Ionian’ and we as a club couldn't be prouder of our captain.
Joe signed for Hull Ionians on 16th September 2009, on loan from Doncaster. He played for the Hawks in a defeat to Driffield before being selected as a replacement for the 1st team for his first 6 games, coming on for 5 of them. He established himself as a first-choice player starting in all but one of the next 21 matches that season.
He committed his future to the club the following season and his natural leadership skills saw him made captain in 2010, a position he has held for 10 seasons, another club record.
Joe scored his first try for the club in October 2010, in a victory over Rugby Lions, scoring twice more that month. Since then he has scored almost every season amassing 50 tries in his 399 matches, his best season being the 2014/15 promotion season when he scored 11 tries.
Joe has made numerous appearances for the County, captaining Yorkshire RFU for the last few seasons. This also led to Joe playing for England Counties from 2016 to 2019, captaining the team for 3 seasons. He also made his Barbarians debut this year, just to add another string to the bow.
Well done again Joe, this is a truly massive achievement. Keep going! 500 is only round the corner...
