Game two was against arch rivals Goole and this turned out to be a real thriller with two packs of forwards battling it out in he middle of the park and was a tense game throughout. Alistair Hall led Ionians forwards well and he was backed up by Jack Bailey, Chris Fox, Piers Smythe, Lucas Powell and Thomas Poole. When Goole threatened they were thwarted by some first class defending from Jack Hassard, Red Silk and Thomas Shirra. The only try of this half was scored by Thomas Shirra and a 5-0 lead for Ionians. Right from the start of the second session Ionians pressed Goole all the way and spent much of this half in the Goole end with some brilliant forward work with Ollie Parker and George Whittaker shining but credit to the Goole defence as it held strong in particular when a surging run from full back Jack Hassard saw three Goole defenders hold him up on the line. Everytime Goole did look dangerous they were met with fierce resistance from Jack Wilson and Jack Hassard who were both in top form. Again there was only one try in this half and it was that man Thomas Shirra of Ionians who scored after his side had won a scrum with their power. This gave Ionians victory by 10-0 as this was to be the last play in the match. What a great start this was for the Hull Ionians Spartans as these were two well contested matches for the beginning of the season and the coaches were amazed at the progress the team had made with some breathtaking rugby and also three players making their debut in Rugby Union. They have now laid down the platform for the season and lots of expectation. Hull Ionians players of the matches chosen by players and coaches were first game Jack Scaife and Red Silk and second match Jack Wilson.
