Hull Ionians U14's v Hullensians/Hull combined team
> Difficult conditions, with strong cross winds, greeted Ionians at Hull
> University. The first game of the second half of the season ultimately saw
> Ionians maintain their strong successful start to the season, with a 41 to
> 12 victory, but the combined Hull/ Hullensians proved difficult opponents
> at times.
>
> Strong tackling, good running, good hands, and terrific commitment were
> features of the day. Ionians were prepared to run the ball from deep, but
> the first 10 minutes were met with strong tackles by Hull/Hullensians
> defence. Where Ionians did have success was at the scrums which enabled
> them to re gather the ball and progress deep into the Hullensians half.
> Penalties also featured to interrupt the flow. The first score of the day
> came from a set piece, with James Malcolmson picking up from the scrum and
> breaking 2 tackles and running in from 25 yards to score under the post,
> the try being converted by Charlie Kirk, 7 to 0 to Ionians. While the
> forwards were getting on top at the breakdown as well as the scrum, strong
> tackles were needed by Ionians , and there were big hits across the park
> ( Danny Betts and Ted Timmins worthy of mention). Good hands from set
> pieces, from Olly Painter and others down the line enabled Danny Couch to
> run for the line only to be bundled into touch just short. but from the
> resulting line out, Ionians recovered the ball and drove the ball over the
> line in the far corner, James Malcolmson being the last attacker to rise
> with the ball. 12 to 0.
>
> From the restart, Charlie Cade recovered the ball and ran 20 yards through
> the Hull defenders, a pass to Kirk enabled him to boot the ball down town,
> and very quickly Ionians were back on the attack. Archie Smeaton was
> sniping through defenders and only desperate tackling stopped the third
> try, though the scrum 5 yards short of the line gave Ionians an
> opportunity that was too good to miss, and Marshall ran from 5 yards to
> crash over the line. 17 to 0.
>
> The last 5 minutes of the first half saw Ionians score two converted
> tries, the pick of the day, being the burst and pass from Marshall to Toms
> who ran at pace deep into the oppositions half before returning the pass
> inside to the awaiting Marshall who bagged his second try.
> The final try was a sweeping move set up initially by Archie Smeaton who
> fined ground through breaking tackles, and passing through Brad and Harry
> Cawoods hands to set Danny Couch off to show his pace down the wing. Half
> Time 31 to 0.
>
> The second half showed a number of changes to Ionians team and while the
> tackling was none less ferocious , Hullensians/Hull started to get more
> ball, scrums were becoming even, and Hullensians/Hull were able to show
> what they could do with ball in hand, and a good move across the backs
> enabled them to score in the corner. 31 to 5.
>
> Ionians responded from the kick off, and as they progressed up the field,
> Harry Cawood was enable to score from a penalty set piece, crashing over
> in the corner. Moments later as Hullensians/Hull attacked, loose ball was
> picked up by James Malcolmson who showed his athleticness again to outrun
> the defence and score. 41 to 5.
>
> Hullensians/Hull scored a second try late in the
> second half to bring the final scores to 42 to 12.
>
> A game which was a credit to both teams, given the conditions, showing
> some excellent skills.
>
> Try Scorers : James Malcolmson 3, Marshall Holgate 2, Harry Cawood, Danny
> couch.
> Conversions Charlie Kirk 3
> Man of Match : Marshall Holgate.
