Match Report by PAUL LYON

Ionians hosted Dinnington at Brantingham Park on a cold, bright but windy day. Given that both teams are in the Yorkshire Cup semi final, it was potentially set for a tight game. However, from the outset Ionians looked to dominate the game.
>
> It was only 2 minutes into the game that Ionians registered the first try of the day. Good early combative tackling, enabled Ionians to gain a scrum and from that the ball came to Adam Myers who ran the last 30 yards to score in the corner, although with the difficult wind, the subsequent conversion was missed.
>
> Ionians pace in the backs and good handling was causing. Dinnington problems, and Joe Walker's break and pass to Tom Scruton, nearly saw the second try being scored, however, the winger was held short of the line and touch called. From the line out, Ionians gained advantage and from the ensuing scrum, James. Malcolmson broke from the Back of the scrum, and broke the initial tackle, and with Toms Vicopf on his shoulder he was able to pass to the flanker to score the second try. 10 to 0, Ionians.
>
> Scrummaging was well matched during the game, and while Dinnington made some progress up the pitch, with ball in hand, Ionians defensive tackling and physicality at the breakdown was proving key. A kick to relieve pressure in Ionians half, enabled them to get good field position, and from that came a try for prop, Will Tindale, who crashed over from short range, after good support from his team mates.
>
> Harry Cawood was proving effective in the back line, and a pass from him, led Danny Couch to run down the wing, only to be well tackled just short of the line. From the line out, Dinnington kicked to relieve the pressure, however, Jack Denly picked the ball up, and charged at the Dinnington defenders, breaking 2 tackles, and from the ruck, James Malcolmson picked the ball up and bullocked himself over the line. 20 to 0 Ionians.
>
> Dinnington restarted and pressed in the Ionians half, good strong tackling from both sides, showed full commitment and while the visitors attacked, possession broke down, and from the quick hands at the ruck, Joe Walker broke and slipped a pass to winger Danny Couch, who took the ball on 20 yards before slipping the ball inside back to Walker, who then found James Malcolmson on his inside who ran the ball in under the posts. 25 to 0.
>
> Dinnington again pressed forward from the restart, however, Ionians defence held firm, and the sheer physicality enabled turnover ball for. Ionians, and when the ball found Harry Cawood, the open space in front of him was too good an opportunity to resist and the centre ran in from 70 yards., this time the conversion was made by Magee and at half time the score was 32 to 0 in favour of Ionians.
>
> Half time brought four changes to Ionians team and now with the wind behind, some good kicking from Charlie Kirk, gave Joe Walker the opportunity to run onto the ball and get the scoring started for the home team.
>
> From the restart, the ball came to James Malcolmson, who simply ran through the Dinnington defence to score try number 8.
>
> Dinnington continued to try and get themselves on the scoreboard, but Ionians were resolute in defence, Adam Myers taking down the Dinnington winger who seemed likely to score. it was the same person who added the 9th and final try of the day, with a terrific maisy run through the Dinnington defence.
>
> With 10 minutes to go a strong run from defence by Marshall saw Ionians back in Dinnington's half, and in good position to attack. However from the scrum, 2 Ionian players were injured as the scrum collapsed, and subsequently the game was finished early, with victory to Ionians 47 to 0.
