Following last weeks narrow defeat to Otley, I's U14 were hoping to bounce
back against what is usually a tricky fixture away to York. I's were slow
out of the blocks as a miss kicked clearance landed straight down the
throat of the York Winger out wide, one on one as the defence was stretched
he touched down for the first score to York, 5-0. From then on it was all
Ionians as they pressed York deep in there 22 for sustained periods. I's
line-out was much better this week the pack was working well and the backs
had plenty of opportunity to run the ball and showcase there talents. With
possession and territory I's were creating chances and it wasn't long
before captain James Malcolmson drove over from the base of the ruck
breaking the defensive line to level the scores following a powerful run
from flanker Archie Smeaton, converted by Kirk 5-7. A line-out won by
Malcolmson at the front and the resulting drive eagerly supported by Danny,
Will and Harvey gave good ball for Kirk who spun the ball out to the back
line, full back Joe Walker made good yards as the ball bounced loose Adam
Myers used his footballing skills to grubber the ball forward and Inside
centre Brad showed good pace to beat the defence and score, Converted by
Kirk 5-14. The penalty count was racking up against I's as it seemed York
could do no wrong. HT 5-14. The second have began as the first finished
with I's dominating possession, Dan Couch chased a long clearance from
Myers and timed his tackle brilliantly forcing the error from the York
centre. I's won the scrum and good exchanges between the forwards finished
with the ball in Billy Tindal's hands to power from the 22 to score at the
side of the posts, easy kick for Kirk 5-21. With I's firmly on the front
foot the coaches could make several substitutions, eleven to be precise
sometimes this can disrupt the performance but not this time all players
that came adapted to play quickly and strengthened the team throughout,
proving I's have strength in depth. York hit back with a try 10-21.
Following the restart a crunching tackle from Toms, and the physicality
from the forwards they managed to counter ruck the ball back, and the
power house that is Billy Tindle powered over for his 2nd of the game a
Kirk to make it four from four, 10-28. Last five minutes of the game and
I's were camped in York territory the forwards working well at the
breakdown the ball was spun to Brad who beat two players to touchdown
running in from 15 yds. FT 10-33
