Match Report by Lee Clarkson

I's u14 travelled to West Yorkshire for the second successive away tie in the Yorkshire Cup this time drawn against a lesser known Yarnbury RUFC. I's having not played them before were unsure what would be waiting to greet them, A noon kick off and sun shining down on them set the backdrop with great conditions for rugby. Is looking slightly different today with key personal missing meant some of the players today had to put a shift in, in unfamiliar positions, and they did not disappoint. Harry Cawood took the no.8 slot, the recovering Johnny Dearing was in at prop and Dan Couch Suring up the defence at full back.

I's hit the game running with a score in the first minute after great work from Adam Myers at 10, drew a man and played Brad through, who powered through the defensive line giving the full back a hand off for his troubles, touching down under the posts, Kirk followed up with the conversion 0-7, nerves settled. Following the Yarnbury restart I's defence was given a workout as Yarnbury pressed taking advantage of two needless penalties for offside, however the defence stood firm and cleared their lines. A good period of play from both sides in the middle of the pitch saw the packs go up against each other with a series of scrums both sides giving their lions share. I's turned the ball over through Billy Tindall and the ball was fired to Adam Myers who burst through the pressing defence, side steps the full back scoring under the posts , As with most weeks Charlie Kirks kicking is in fine form slotting over for the extra points, 0-14.

I's third followed a defensive clearance from Yarnbury to the halfway, Danny Couch took the ball cleanly, showing great pace and awareness out wide he slipped the ball to Jo Walker who lit the after burners, almost Johnny May like to outpace the chasing Yarnbury defence. Kirk adding the extra two, 0-21. Crunching tackles from Paul Evision and Charlie Cade, the latter unlucky not to be on the score sheet this week after several great runs, snuffed out any danger from the Yarnbury attack. The Ionians backs today were a class apart fast flowing ball and picking holes in the Yarnbury defence at every opportunity. Although the penalty count was racking up against Ionians all the pressure was with the visitors spending most of the game camped in the Yarnbury half.

Danny Couch was next on the score sheet hitting the line at pace from full back after the forwards took another against the head, Kirk converted 0-28. Benn Willson had a great take following the Yarnbury restart driving the ball back to the ably supported by the rest of the pack, which worked the ball back for stand in no8 Harry to hit the blind side at pace, powering from halfway to score under the post and round the half of with Kirk converting 0-35.

The second half brought I's substitutions, Olly Painter to scrum half, Toms Vicops to hooker, I's discipline at the ruck let them down with needless penalties. Pressure was soon back on the Yarnbury team as once again Harry Cawood showed a clean pair of heals racing clear under the posts, converted by Brad 0-42. A maul following the restart saw Jack Denley rip the ball to show good aggression and pace powering forward. Billy Tindall made a powerful run from halfway, who for a 6 foot 3 prop showed great pace and awareness to slide the ball to Brad, who has pace to burn touched down under the posts, Painter converted 0-49. Danny Couch powered from his 22, making inroads to the Yarnbury half but was then bundled in to touch, Is took the following line out against the head and the classy backs spun the ball out at pace across to Charlie Cade showed great determination, offloading the ball to Brad who turned the defence with a chip over the top unlucky not to collect. The I's backs took the next attack at pace as the ball was spun all the way down the line and Jo Walker was on hand on the looping overlap to score, Again A master kicking class by Kirk, 0-56. Kirk dropping into the full back position cleared down field which was chased by Adam Myers who collected the ball and ran in the last try of the game finished off by Kirk, 0-63.
