Match Report by PAUL LYON

Ionians entertained Scunthorpe at Brantingham Park and maintained their excellent start to the season with a convincing 85 to 0 victory.

With the wind behind, I's first attack nearly saw them score, but good defence from Scunthorpe saw them protect their line, however, a Scunthorpe player was injured in the breakdown, and we wish him well for a speedy recovery.

From the restarted game, I's made an immediate impact, with Adam Myers running onto a kick from Charlie Kirk, and raced down the left wing, before scoring under the posts. Conversion Charlie Kirk, 7 to 0.

Some excellent handling from the backs saw the ball pass from Joe Walker to Will Tindale to Charlie Kirk to Adam Myers to score his second.

Ionians were really showing their speed and strength and were penetrating the Scunthorpe defence, knock ons from Paul Evison and Charlie Kirk stopped the score progressing, however it wasn't long before. Danny Couch scored the third try, being sent over the line by a pass from Joe Walker.

Scunthorpe were barely out of their own half, given the strong headwind and the force of their opponents. Only desperate defending stopped the scoring momentarily. A charge down by Toms, enabled Charlie Kirk to pop the ball to Adam Myers to complete his hat trick of tries. Charlie Kirk converted successfully, 28 to 0.

Ionians were now rampant, and. Jimbob belatedly got onto the scoresheet. A strong run from Harry Cawood, was well stopped by a good tackle from Scunthorpe's full back, however, the subsequent kick up field to alleviate the pressure led to Adam Myers recovering the ball and skipping the tackles to set up a final pass for Joe Walker to run over the line.

Scunthorpe restarted, and a catch from Charlie, who then ran across the pitch evading tackles before he popped the ball to Jimbob, who then straightened the run, and ran through the defence before a final inside pass to Adam. Myers to score again.

The forwards were creating a great platform for the backs and the backs were enjoying the space being offered to them, and they finished off the first half, with an eight try, as Toms made a break before setting up Joe Walker to get his second try.

Half Time 52 to 0 in favour of Ionians.

With the wind behind for Scunthorpe the first 15 minutes of the second half was more evenly contested. Good strong tackles and aggression from both sides saw the game being played in the middle of the park. Occassional breaks by Scunthorpe were stopped by Conker, solid at Full Back. Danny Couch was through, but called back for a foot in touch. Danny Betts and Jack Denly both had good runs. After 15 minutes though, Ionians managed to make progress into Scunthorpe's half, and a quick pass put Archie Smeaton through to run the ball in over the line.

Harry Lyon caught the ball from the restart and from the resulting breakdown, Jimbob collected the ball and burst through the defence to run the ball in from the half way line. 66 to 0.

Credit to Scunthorpe who tried to keep going, however Ionians were too strong, and try number 11 was not too long in coming, and Charlie Kirk was the beneficiary after good work from Joe Walker and ghost, this was the teams 50th try of the season, in their 5th game.

Jack Denly helped eat up the next try, when a crunching tackle by him on the Scunthorpe stand off, led to a ruck, and Harvey Kay, picked up the ball and ran through the middle of the pitch to score under the posts.

The last minute saw the majority of the players involved, after recycling the ball, on when fifth occasion Will Tindale popped up to score his first try for Ionians.

Final Score 85 to 0

Well played Ionians, great work all across the park, with some really excellent contributions from many players.
