I's under 14s travelled to Malton on Sunday to play their first game of the
season, two weeks after most other teams started due to cancellations.
Ideal conditions for rugby and playing on the Malton first team pitch saw
I's take the attack to Malton right from the off. Debutants and players in
new positions only seemed to strengthen the team with a new look front row
and the pack working well winning their fair share against the head, solid
rucking and counter rucking from the forwards gave I's lots of turn over
ball. The backs looked as fluid as ever with fast flowing rugby spinning
the ball out to the wingers at every opportunity.
Tackling, defence and line speed pushed Malton onto the back foot, slowing down their attack.
Sustained pressure from Ionians and the whitewash crossed 5 times in the
first half, enabled the I's coaches to make many changes across the team
fielding 24 players. Credit to Malton who never gave up and defended well,
on the day I's pace and power was too hot to handle.
