Match report by Paul Lyon

Ionian's U13's travelled to Malton following their first defeat of the year last week, and it took Ionians less than 2 minutes to register the first try of the game. I's kicked off and from a brief flurry of activity from the Malton players on their 22, a punt up to the halfway line by the Malton back, saw I's fullback James Magee collect the ball the and promptly sprint down the left side of the pitch, beating the advancing Malton backs and scoring to the left of the posts.
5 - 0 , conversion missed.

From the restart Marshall collected the ball and made 10 yards upfield, however, Malton got turnover ball from the breakdown, and good passing, enabled Malton centre to burst through the Ionian's line, now one on one with James Magee the fullback crunched the attacker and the initial attack was stopped. Loose ball though was picked up by Malton who were able to get over the Ionian's line to level the scores at 5 - 5.

The next 5 minutes saw both teams contest well at the breakdown, some stray passing, and some good honest tackles being made, however little ground was being made.

Some slick passing through the I's backs, saw winger, Harvey, break through, only to be tackled 20 yards short of the line. Encouragement from the coaches saw I's forwards get more into the game, and start to gain ball at the breakdown, and eventually they wore down the Malton defence and James Malcolmson bulldozed over the line to put Ionians ahead again. 10 - 5.

Malton attacked again, and some strong defence by Tex, Harry Lyon, Benn Wilson, Paul Evison, Charlie Cade, Jimbob, Charlie Kirk and Olly Painter, stopped the attack, albeit that Olly had to be carried off.

The resultant progression up the pitch, started by aggressive running from Archie Smeaton and Will Plater, led to a scrum in favour of Ionians. The short kick over the Malton defence by James. Magee enabled Adam Myers to pick up and run through to score under the posts with the conversion duly completed by James Magee, 17 - 5, at half time.

Second half saw some tactical changes for Ionians and soon the passing among the backs started to improve with penetrating runs from Danny Couch, Paul Evison among others. Quick ball between scrum half, Kirk and Magee at fly half enabled Adam Myers to stretch his legs and score his second try of the day. Conversion completed, 24 - 5.

Ionians now enjoyed both good possession and good field position and the next try was not long coming. Harry Cawood burst through Malton's defence to set up the next opportunity, as the ball was spilt into open play the defender kicked into touch and the resultant long line out throw was picked up by James Magee and put down over the Malton try line. Tricky conversion completed by Charlie Kirk, score now 31 - 5.

A try and conversion by Malton, with 10 minutes to go gave them some hope, however further pressure on the Malton defence by I's forwards and backs alike, saw big Will Robinson steam over the line to score the final try from close range, and to make the final score 36 - 12.

Well done to all the squad, as there were strong contributions from a lot of players. Men of Match, Harvey Kay - Gibson and James Magee

Tries - James Magee 2, Adam Myers 2, James Malcolmson, Will Robinson

Conversions - James Magee 2, Charlie Kirk
