Match Report by Paul Lyon

: Hull Ionians U13's v Dinnington U13's

Following Ionians 90 to 0 victory against Scarborough last week, they returned to Brantingham Park to take on Dinnington. A strong wind made conditions difficult for both sides, yet there was still plenty of good rugby on offer for the well supported teams.
With Ionians having the wind behind them, they were quickly into their stride and following a ruck on Dinnington's 22, James Malcolmson picked up and scored in the corner, 5 to 0 in favour of I's after 90 seconds. difficult conversion attempt missed by Charlie Kirk.
From the restart, given the strong headwind the kick off didn't reach the 10 yard line and the resultant play enabled Marshall Holgate to run down the left wing only to be tackled 5 yards from the line. Strong defending and good work at the breakdown by Dinnington forwards pushed Ionians back, as the play became a little scrappy for a time. A scrum on Dinnington's 22, saw hooker, Harry Lyon, heel the ball well and the strong scrum foundation enabled James Malcolmson to pick up and run straight through the Dinnington backs and to touch down under the posts, for a converted try by James Magee, 12 to 0.
Play was centred in the middle of Ionians half for the next 10 minutes, with occassional breaks from Dinnington's backs, number 12, Will Gladwin impressing, and only resolute tackling, by Daniel Couch, Charlie Kirk, Charlie Cade and improved rucking at the breakdown by the forwards, Tex, Archie, and Danny B kept Dinnington away from Ionians try line.
After 20 minutes from a kick on I's 22, a strong chase and pressure on Dinnington's fullback by Adam Myers, the ball found its way to I's full back, James Magee, who backed himself to go on the outside of the oppositions defence to sprint over the line and score under the posts, to convert his own try.
A few minutes later the ball was selflessly and quickly played through Ionians backs hands, following brave work at the breakdown, and the final pass to winger Paul Evison, saw him score in the left corner. 24 to 0 at half time.

With the wind behind, and following a number of changes to I's team, Dinnington got the second half off to a flyer and after 10 minutes they had reduced the deficit to 14 points, having scored 2 tries, and had momentum with them. However, some last ditch tackles, particularly by James Magee, stemmed the tide, and from a foray into Dinnington's half, Ionians took a quick penalty down the right wing, and James Malcolmson burst through tackles to claim his third try. The restart showed Elliot to have good hands and from a series of phases, opportunities came to Harvey Gibson, to show some pace down the right wing, though he was well tackled by his opposite number.

With 5 minutes to go some great work by Will Robinson in the maul enabled him to pop a pass to Charlie Kirk, who flipped onto Olly, to Jimbob, and finally to Harry Cawood to enable him to score in the corner, great try. 34 to 10.

Still battling to the end, Dinnington breached the Ionians defence for a third time, when Will Gladwin, scored to cap a strong display. Final score 34 to 15, and Ionians 9 match unbeaten start to the season continues, full steam ahead now to Round 2 of the Yorkshire Cup.
