Harrogate were as tenacious as their hosts in their defensive work but played too much of the game in their own half to gain many scoring chances.
The Georgians are to be congratulated for still turning up for the game despite having only 14 men and being unable to field a front row – it may have been uncontested scrums but at least the players had a game.
The Georgians had a chance of a long-range penalty in the 3rd minute but it bounced back off the cross bar and the defence was quick enough to gather it and clear. The Buccaneers then mounted sustained pressure in the attacking 22 but could not break a solid defence with the short passing game required in the gale.
A midfield battle ensued of driving forward play with the occasional kick that went sideways in the wind before the Buccaneers scored 3 tries in the last 10 minutes of the half. Theo Tyrer and Callum Coyne were driven over from close range then when Harrogate attempted a long pass in the attacking 22 Theo Tyrer was first to the ball and kicked on 70 metres before being tackled off the ball resulting in a penalty try, 17-0 at the break.
The second half saw lashing rain as well as the cross wind with too many errors and no score for 25 minutes before the rain stopped and Harrogate ran back a poor kick wide out to score in the corner and somehow still kick the conversion into the wind.
The Buccaneers forwards drove upfield again helped by penalties and a yellow card and Aiden Calvert nearly scored but was just short, but Pete McGlynn followed up to cross the line and score.
With two minutes to go Harrogate again broke from a poor kick for a 70 metre try but the Buccaneers had the last word with Aiden Calvert just reaching the line this time.
