Ionians travelled to Malton to conclude, what has been another successful season.
Firm conditions and a dry day were conducive to good rugby, and a lineout from the kick off, Ionians regained possession inside Malton's 22, and passing through hands, Joe Walker entered the line from full back to power over after barely a minute. 5 to 0.
A second try was not long in coming as Ionians pressurised Malton's defence. Will Plater was working hard at the breakdown, and as Malton kicked to clear their line, Joe Walker picked the ball up and ran back at Malton, from the ensuing breakdown, Jack Denley broke, and Harvey Kay Gibson, was on hand to run the ball in the corner. 10 to 0, conversion attempt hit the post.
As the first half wore on, Malton started to come more into the game, good work seen at the scrum, use of their number 8, Lockwood, and occasional breaks by the backs, however Ionians defence was resolute until the last 5 minutes of the half, when after sustained pressure on the 5 metre line, Malton eventually managed to get over the gain line and score. 10 to 5.
The last play of the half in which was now developing into a good hard contest, saw Ionians breach Maltons defence for a third time. As the passed the ball from side to side, the ball eventually came to Cade on the wing, who made a burst for the line, only to be held short, the ball recycled to the right through, Myers, Clarkson and eventually Holgate who ran in from a few yards to score under the posts. Conversion made by Myers 17 to 5. Half Time
Second half started and immediately a try scored by Malton. High kick off wasn't dealt with by the Ionians defence and Lockwood was able to collect and run through to score. 17 to 10.
Ionians responded with a try from defence, the potent back line was a threat all day long, and when Harry Cawood capitalised on a Joe walker break, the final pass to winger Cade, saw him cut back in and score. 22 to 10.
Ionians were rampant now and prepared to run at any opportunity. Joe Walker again coming into the line and injecting some pace. Toms Vickops broke some tackles, then at the breakdown Marshall who was able to feed prop Joe Nellist, to score. 27 to 10.
Joe Walker added a 6th try for Ionians, bursting through again, from a pass from Myers, to run down the wing and score under the posts. Conversion made by Myers 34 to 10.
Having set up the previous try, stand off Myers now decided to score individually, and from inside his own 22, broke a couple of tackles and ran the remaining 80 yards to score under the posts, duly converted. 41 to 10.
An injury to Plater, who worked tirelessly during the game, dampened Ionians spirits a little, but the final try started and finished by Holgate, with a break, through the hands of Myers to Vickops, and then back inside to Holgate, was a joy to watch.
Final score 46 to 10 to Ionians
Good effort from both parties, Ionians resolute in defence, with plenty of good ball won through the forwards, and ultimately too much pace in the backs.
