Away Day Blues

Ionians travelled to Driffield, with a greatly depleted squad, due to holidays and injuries, on a wet and windy winters day.

Initial play was fast and furious with strong tackles made, but wet conditions lent itself to dropped ball and the game took on a stop start situation. After 5 minutes the referee sinbinned an Ionians forward and from the resulting penalty, Drifield took the lead. 3 to 0.

While a man down, Ionians kept Driffield at bay and tried to advance upfield. Pressure in the oppositions half was met by solid Driffield defence, and a breakaway through the Driffield backs was only halted by a fantastic try saving tackle from full back Danny Couch.

However a kick over the top into the try area and a favourable bounce to Driffield enabled them to score the first try of the game, converted. 10 to 0.

The remainder of the first half remained competitive if unspectacular in breakaways or try scoring opportunities. Ionians forwards did well at the scrum, but were losing ball at the lineout, strong tackling from the forwards led by Toms, and supported by the backs, meant that play was maintained generally in midfield. Unfortunately for Ionians captain Adam Myers was taken off injured having suffered a head injury in making a tackle. Half Time 10 to 0 to the home side.

With the wind behind in the second half, Ionians started brightly and from good field position on Driffield 22, Ionians were able to score as new captain, Billy Tindall drove over the line from a tap penalty. Conversion made by Brad Clarkson. 10 to 7.

However almost immediately, Driffield pressed up field and from a scrum just outside Ionians try line, their scrum half proved elusive and dived over from short range, conversion made 17 to 7.

Ioniians competed but struggled to counteract Driffields defence, breaks from Brad and Harry C, gave some hope, and the forwards continued to graft but couldn't secure sufficient good quality ball in the conditions.

A final try for Driffield down the left side went unconverted so the final score ended at 22 to 7 to the home team.
