West Park too strong

Ionians travelled to West Park Leeds, on a bright but blustery day.

There was a feeling of deja vu, as from the kick off Ionians spilled the ball, and following a couple of penalties, West Park had the field position to manufacture a scoring opportunity. 7 to 0.

From the restart, Ionians pressed forward and started to establish the pattern of the game with progress made through Ionians forwards. Unfortunately a spilt ball, enabled West Park to clear their lines and from a subsequent lineout, the ball was shipped wide, and breaking through tackles, the winger was able to score West Park's second try. 14 to 0. 10 minutes gone

Ionians pressed again and kept the ball within the forwards. While defence was strong progress was made and Ionians started to claw their way back into the match with 2 forwards tries, the first through Marshall, the second through Will Robinson. 14 to 10

The game was very much on now, and the final try of the first half went to the home side, potential for forward pass at the tackle, however the winger was able to speed over the line again and score in the corner. 19 to 10 at half time.

Second half saw Ionians playing into the wind and a few changes made by the coach. Ionians pressed looking for the try to bring them back into the game, however, West Park were resolute in defence, and it was the home side that scored next with a break away try under the posts. 26 to 10.

The forwards came back again and through captain James Malcolmson brought the deficit back, the ground being made through short pick and go bursts. 26 to 15.

A hoof upfield from West Park's stand off put Ionians backs under pressure and the bounce of the ball favoured the wing, who raced into score. 33 to 15.

Ionians came back again and another forwards try scored by James Malcolmson, brought the score back to 33 to 22.

Final try of the game came to West Park to leave the score 38 to 22 in favour of the home side. A competitive game, played in the right manner, in difficult conditions. Congratulations to West Park and good luck in future rounds.
