Phew - A Real Battle

Ionians entertained Dinnington at Brantingham Park, on a calm bright day. The supporters were well rewarded with a delicately balanced, hard physical game of rugby.

From the kick off it was apparent how well organised and how up for the contest the visitors were. Kicking behind the backs and challenging Ionians full back, Adam Myers, to bring the ball out of defence. Good contest at the breakdown, again saw Dinnington initially win extra ball, however from the initial exchanges the score remained level. A scrum just inside Dinnington's half was won by Ionians and from the quick ball, Toms at outside centre made good ground and passed to winger Charlie Cade to score in the corner.
5 to 0 to Ionians, conversion from the touchline narrowly missed by Charlie Kirk

From the restart Toms again collected the ball and made good ground but the advantage was lost at the breakdown and Dinnington tried to impose themselves on the Ionians defence. Dinnington played some useful rugby through hands and some good tackles from Ionians kept them at bay.

After 20 minutes though, Dinnington got good field position near the Ionians 22, and working together were able to progress forward and ultimately breach the Ionians line, with Connor Hancock scoring. Conversion missed, 5 all.

Occasional breaks from Brad, James M and Archie saw Ionians come back into the game, but this time Dinningtons defence held firm and it was a counter attack late in the half which saw the other Hancock, Callum get over the try line in the right hand corner. 10 to 5 at half time.

A real physical encounter which took its toll on some of the boys, and hopefully the injured lads will all be ok sooner rather than later.

Chasing the game in the second half, Ionians started to gain some momentum, though the penalty count did rise. Field position was crucial. James Malcolmson made a bid for glory, but was well tackled by the last man. Ionians started to get a bit more of the ball at the breakdown, and from a scrum in the Dinnington 22, made progress to the Dinnington line with the number 8 making the initial break, and having been recycled the captain was there to drop over the line. Crucially Adam Myers stepped up to kick the conversion, 12 to 10 in favour of Ionians.

That was the final score, though Dinnington had a 5 minute spell encamped on Ionians 5 metre line, but credit to Ionians defence they kept them at bay after a series of scrums.

A tense time for both sets of spectators, ultimately the whistle was blown and Ionians maintained their unbeaten start to the season.

Well done to both sides, a thoroughly decent game

Final score 12 to 10.
